Лёгкий вспомогательный транспортный самолёт U-5 Twin Courier был построен на основе гражданского проекта Helio Courier. В конце 1950-х годов ЦРУ США заказало компании Helio создание вспомогательного самолета с укороченным взлетом и посадкой (STOL) для для выполнения спецопераций в Тибете.
Проект, получивший обозначение Helio H-500, был начат в 1958 году. По заказу американской компании фюзеляжи для самолетов начала изготовлять португальская компания ALAR-Empresa Iberica.
Прототип Twin Courier (N92860) совершил свой первый полет в апреле 1960 года. После успешных испытаний было изготовлено семь экземпляров самолета. В качестве взлетной площадки H-500 мог использовать неподготовленную полосу длинной чуть более 90 метров.
Первые два ((52-5955/5956)) получили обозначение U-5A, следующие три (63-8072/8074) — U-5B. Все самолеты были переданы авиакомпании «Air America» в Индокитае. В 1967 году все машины были переданы правительству Индии в качестве гражданских самолетов.
В 1968 году был изготовлен один самолет H-580 Twin Courier. Он отличался удлиненным носом и 290-сильными двигателями Lycoming.
