В 1913 году было придумано одно из самых бесполезных изобретений, канадский министр обороны Сэм Хьюз разработал и запатентовал саперную лопату в лезвии которого было сделано довольно крупное отверстие.
По задумке Сэма Хьюза, благодаря этому лопату можно было использовать как пуленепробиваемый щит, а через отверстие наблюдать за противником и вести стрельбу из винтовки.
Таких лопат было изготовлено около 25 000 штук, их отправили в Европу для солдат 1-й канадской дивизии. Но, по непонятной причине, никому не пришло в голову провести испытания данного изделия. Уже в войсках обнаружилось, что лезвие лопаты оказалось далеко не пуленепробиваемым — оно не могло остановить даже пули малого калибра, большой вес делал лопату неудобной для длительного ношения, а из-за довольно большого отверстия копать рыхлую почву было почти невозможно.
Разочарованные бестолковым изобретением британские и канадские военачальники отказались принимать лопату Хьюза на вооружение, и, в конечном итоге, дырявые лопаты были списаны на металлолом.
