160 лет назад, 12 декабря 1862 года, в ходе гражданской войны в США подорвался на якорной мине и затонул броненосец юнионистов «Кэйро» — первый в мире корабль, погибший от этого нового и, как оказалось, весьма эффективного оружия.
К слову, мины Нобеля, которые московиты пытались применять против английского флота восемью годами ранее, в Крымской войне, оказались слишком слабыми (всего лишь четыре килограмма черного пороха), чтобы привести к уничтожению судна. Ни один из напоровшихся на них английских пароходофрегатов не пошел ко дну, отделавшись относительно легкими повреждениями.
Мина конфедератов содержала пять галлонов (около 19 кг) пороха в большой стеклянной бутыли, и этого оказалось достаточно для потопления речного колесного броненосца водоизмещением 512 тонн. Ранее «Кэйро» успел отличиться в Мемфисской битве, выдержав попадания артиллерийских снарядов в стальные борта, но против взрыва под деревянным днищем он оказался беззащитным.
